When Robbie Ettelson started the music blog unkut.com in 2004 to fill-in time during the night shift as a printer, he had
no idea it would lead him to working as music journalist for print magazines in the US, UK, Italy, France, Germany and
Japan. Over the course of the following decade, Robbie conducted over 180 phone interviews with rappers, DJ's,
producers, musicians and journalists.
Past The Margin: A Decade of Unkut Interviews is a collection of long-form interviews with those who were there for
the key milestones in the development of rap. It features thirty conversations with members of pioneering groups such
as Public Enemy, De La Soul, Wu-Tang Clan, Mobb Deep, Boogie Down Productions and The Beatnuts, as well as
legendary soloists such as LL Cool J, Schoolly-D and Just-Ice. Plus exclusive sessions with three of the key members
of the Sugar Hill Records house band, who were responsible for hits such as Grandmaster Flash and The Furious
Five's 'The Message'.
'What could someone from another continent know about this thing born of the urban immigrant experience within the
city which never sleeps? Apparently everything. Unkut was the student of rap that Hip-Hop always needed. An
insufferable purist with an acute sense of detail and memory. This collection is more than just some of the best
interviews over the past ten years but more like a landmark document from an era in music, art and culture we will
never again witness. This is a cultural document for you to learn who and what influenced the most influential genre of
music ever.' - Dallas Penn
